What is one of the best (or funniest) gifts you have ever given or received (doesn't have to be Christmas)?
When I was probably twelve or so, I went to the mall to do my Christmas shopping. I chose a really nice coffee mug from Barnies for my grandpa, and brought it home in a little box. And then I dropped it. And when I opened the box, the nice mug had turned into a handle on a chunk of ceramic, and lots of other little bits. So I closed that box up, and wrapped it, and put it under the tree. And on Christmas morning, I handed it to my grandpa, and as he reached for it, I dropped it. And then I pretended to cry over the fact that he broke his beautiful gift. And then I fessed up and everyone laughed. I have a picture of him holding the ceramic chuck by the handle in that joyous moment, I just wish I knew where it is...

Thanks for playing, and good luck!!

  1. My husband sent me on a treasure hunt on Christmas morning and, at the end, I found my gift in a treasure chest- a trip NYC!

  2. One Christmas many years ago my boyfriend gave me 2 big boxes for Christmas. I was all excited! Such big boxes, what could they be? When I opened the first one inside was a very large ugly stuffed turtle with a silly hat. I looked up to see him all smiley and happy with himself. I had to act like it was a great gift. I figured there was another box and surely that had to have something really nice in it. When I opened it much to my horror there was another large ugly stuffed turtle just like the first one! He thought that I would like it so much that he got me two of them!! Yikes! Little did I know at the time that I would marry that man and years later my children would love those ugly turtles and have fun crawling all over them!

  4. David and I were dating and he came to spend his first Christmas with his family-to-be. I saved his present from me for last and brought him a huge box to open. As he unwrapped box after box after box (maybe seven altogether), the anticipation grew. He finally unwrapped the smallest box to reveal...a wallet. (A very nice, very expensive wallet that I was so proud to give him!) He was letdown, but he had to act pleased in front of his future wife and her family. The Christmas after we married, I gave him a golf club (driver) that he was thrilled about, so I got better as a gift giver!

  5. My Grandmother gave me a flannel shirt one year for Christmas. As the next Christmas came near, if fact just a few days before, the shirt just fell apart, literally. It was like it dry rotted over night. A few days later on Christmas there was another flannel shirt from her. We laughed about buying a shirt that self destructs in a year so that she would know what to buy each year.

  8. This is a cute post - I have enjoyed reading everyone's fun stories. These are great memories we have, aren't they? Life is so special with our loved ones to share it with.

One of my favorite gifts received was while Ben and I were dating: we were celebrating his birthday, and at the end of the day he said he had something for me. I said "for ME? but it's YOUR birthday" and he presented a beautiful diamond ring he had hidden away for months to give me at that "right" moment. What a surprise to receive something so special on HIS birthday! How funny. (And he made sure to tell me it was for my right hand, lol! The left hand ring came later.)

  9. So three years in a row at the infamous Hopper Christmas party I have taken part in the white elephant gift excahnge. I always choose a gift when it comes to my turn rather than stealing from someone that already opened a gift and these are the awesome things I have wound up with over the years. First Year: Ped Egg. Second Year: Chia Pet. This Year: Gaither Family Christmas CD (Which someone had left unopened from last years party and then regifted it haha). So needless to say next year I am cutting my losses and stealing someones gift :)

  11. My sisters and I had Wonder Woman Underroos when we were young girls. About 10 years ago, Mom had a small Christmas gift for each of us girls to open, but she insisted we open them at the same time. Wouldn't ya know it, she had wrapped up our WW Underroos as a gift. She found them when purging some stuff from the house and there they were. So what do kids do when they get clothes as a gift? Yep, that's right...we put them on right them and took a picture. We got the biggest laugh out of those gifts!!

  13. Wow, I guess a lot of people want those Magic Tickets, huh?

Love your story about Grandpa's mug. The funniest gift I ALMOST received was the time a very dear (& completely wicked) friend psyched me out into believing she was sending me a live lobster for my birthday. I was wondering how to keep it alive in the downstairs loo until I was ready to eat it & my poor dad was planning how to dispatch the critter when the time came. The lobster never arrived and, as far as I'M concerned, she still owes me one :-)
