Wind and Sun

This morning, Bryan came home from working out with a friend, and I headed out for a nice long bike ride. Oh, how Bella begged and cried to go with me. I tried to explain to her that I needed a little mama time, but she felt so rejected. So I promised her that if she worked diligently on her school work today, that I would take her out for a special mom and Bella ride. And then she smiled, and I left. And it really has been too long since I have exercised in peace and quiet, by myself. I had the wind at my back, and the sun on my face, and oh, it was beautiful.

And when I came home, big sister was hard at work on her school work.

It felt like Fall today. The weather was cool in the morning, perfect for a bike ride, and cool enough to sit on the back porch to do some reading. For lunch we had grilled cheese and tomato soup (in honor of Fall), and after lunch... we rode.

She hadn't taken any long riding trips yet, so I wasn't sure how far she would make it before she got tired. But once we started, this girl wanted to keep going. I talked her through the "big roads" (the busy ones, with no sidewalks) saying (in my calmest mom voice) things like; "stay on the right" "there's a car coming past us, it's going to be loud, don't turn to look at it, just keep going", "look straight ahead", "keep your eyes open for sticks and holes in the road" "these railroad tracks are going to be bumpy, lets get off and walk over them" "look both ways, ok, it's safe to cross" and other mom-ish things to say. And it was surprisingly relaxing. She smiled as we rode, and chattered on about everything she saw.

And we kept on riding, until we got to our friends house. We stopped for a few minutes to play, and then returned home. She was so excited to tell Bryan and Grady about her trip, and that she rode 4.02 miles. I think that bike ride meant as much to me as it did to her. I sure do love a little one-on-one time with my big girl.
